Social Justice at YLC

By Team E

Social Justice at YLC

Social Justice is a workshop that is presented by our Builders, where Leaders learn about different topics regarding Social Justice daily. The goal of these workshops is to educate us, the Leaders about how our United States society works, how to respect others and how to have a win/win situation with people from different backgrounds.

Today, June 28th, 2013, we had a guest speaker, Stephanie Johnson, on the topic of –isms, such as, racism, sexism, heterosexism, audism, ableism, and so on. The guest speaker empowered us on how to conquer and put –isms to a stop. She explained how society labels an individual based on his/her race, class, ability, education, partner preference, religion, and sex. Just because the individual is different, it doesn’t mean that they should be treated any different from someone that is well known.

Stephanie Johnson gave a presentation about “-ims” to the leaders.

We watched Stephanie Johnson showing us one of the social justice activities.

Stephanie used the water as a symbol of oppression during her social justice workshop.

Recap on Camp Council!

Camp council is a mini-organization within the Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) so that each leader has an opportunity to share their voice on their thoughts and concerns to improve this camp. Leaders are learning how to run the meetings properly with the parliament procedure.

Last night, June 27th, we had our third Camp Council meeting. Most of the meeting was discussion and voting for the new co- chairpersons for each of our four different events. The voting began and the positions were given.

James Beldon and Jade DeLaO won co- chairpersons for YLC pageant night. YLC pageant night is a night when leaders show their talent, presentation, and on stage interviewing skills.

Vlado Slavov and Amanda Wolf are our leaders project co-chairpersons. They will be in charge and work with all the leaders in the camp to decide what to give as an annual gift and for our 2013 banner.

Aaron Kellogg and Ashley Pabon are the co- chairpersons for our ASL night. ASL night is when the leaders have the opportunity to showcase their ASL skills with things like: ASL poems, ASL stories, hand-shape stories, ASL ventriloquists, etc.

Domenic Cade and Jacob Pfau are the co- chairpersons for our final farewell – Banquet Night. Banquet night is a night where we can say good-bye to our friends.

President Sabina Shysh discussed about the co-chairpersons during the
 Camp Council meeting.

Our Trip to Silver Falls

Right after breakfast, our leaders and builders hydrated themselves with water bottles and packed the necessities for our field trip to Silver Falls! We hiked up and down, passed three waterfalls, and took photos along the way for two hours.

When we finally got to our stopping point, each of us could finally catch our breath from the exhausting hike and enjoy the rest of the afternoon swimming at Silver Falls. Although the water was freezing, that did not stop the leaders from getting soaked!

Later in the evening, we continued our program with evening program, Leadership Development Program, and Camp Council!

Enjoying the waterfall!

Perfect photo op!

Hello, YLC '13!

Smiles from Shayla Acree and Casey Johnson-Pasqua!

Courtney Justice is about to jump into the water!
